It’s Not Hard to Find a Stupid Republican

That’s the only conclusion one can come to after reading Rep. Scott Garrett’s bonehead quote in the WSJ report on Obama’s financial reform speech. The WSJ reported Garrett as saying:

“This renewed focus on financial-services reform by the Obama administration is clearly a transparent attempt at faux-populism, in light of the outcome of the Massachusetts Senate race,” said Rep. Scott Garrett (R., N.J.). “The American people have rejected extreme government expansion into the private sector, be it in the health care, financial services or auto industry.”

That’s just not smart. We don’t love the Obama proposal to disallow proprietary trading by banks but only because we think there are better ways to get where he wants to go. Still, telling banks they can’t go to the casino with money they have only because of FDIC insurance and other too-big-to-fail subsidies is hardly the Communist Manifesto.
